Brook's version of Hamlet clearly bears the hallmark of
his theatrical aesthetic and productions to date: radiantly clear
and simple bare minimalism.
The cosmopolitan casting of Indian, Japanese, European and African faces
and accents underscores the universality of the message and the multicultural
melting pot so dear to the director's heart. The words are Shakespeare's,
but the actors' voices come from three continents, making this Tragedy
of Hamlet a definitive “world play” where the riddle and intense
tragedy of the Prince of Denmark – “To be or not to be” – is voiced and
resonates in each and every one. As he has done with many of his productions
( The Mahabharata , Carmen ), Peter Brook himself has
designed and made the film, transposing the performance with a true cinematographic
feel and intimate connection with the actor
