Lieutenant Roque (Vincent Martinez) is a young French officer, tired and dispirited by the endless Algerian war of independence that seems far from a resolution. Roque and his men, a scruffy assortment of recruits of North African extraction, have been posted to a dusty, isolated village. His official role is to pacify the locals, wave the French flag and convince the Algerians of his nation's good intentions. But in fact, his main target is the dismantling and suppression of the insurgent Algerian underground liberation army, the famed and feared Front de Liberation Nationale (FLN). After the discovery of a notebook containing confidential information, Roque is confronted by the possible betrayal of some of his young North African recruits. One of the suspects tells him of the dilemmas he faces, being at once a French soldier but also Algerian-born. The ensuing crisis and its dramatic consequences emphasize the absurdities of a useless war that holds out little hope for anyone.

Smart script co-written by Moroccan-born French helmer Philippe Faucon ( Samia ) pulls off the difficult task of doing justice to opposing positionswhile withholding enough information to maintain suspense.
