Richard Galliano

“Richard Galliano changed the history of the accordion: today we can speak of 'before' and ‘after' Galliano."
(Yasuhiro Kobayashi - Japanese accordionist, Björk 's accompanist).

Galliano was born in 1950 in Cannes, started playing accordion at 4 then took up lessons on the trombone, harmony and counterpoint at the Academy of Music in Nice. At 14, he began listening to jazz and discovered Clifford Brown, which opened his mind to a different world.

After years of study and apprenticeship, in 1973, he went to Paris and quickly contact with the famous singer Claude Nougaro, and worked three years as conductor, arranger and composer with that orchestra. In an important meeting with the great Astor Piazzolla took place in 1983, and with his guidance, Galliano went back to is his root and starts creating his own style of music.

Richard Galliano, direct heir to Astor Piazzolla, interprets, composes and orchestrates music which seems to casually mix reminiscences of swing, marked echoes of tango, French bistro waltzes, Bill Evans ballads, Keith Jarrett improvisations and the Afro-American lessons of Charlie Parker and John Coltrane, all this performed with a pleasing chromatic taste which goes back to best French tradition from Couperin to Debussy and above all to Ravel.

Over the years Galliano had played with Chet Baker, Ron Carter, Joe Zawinul, Al Foster, Pierre Michelot, Biréli Lagrène, Jean-François Jenny-Clark, Eddy Louiss, Philip Catherine, Charlie Haden, Michel Portal, Michel Petrucciani, Enrico Rava, Toots Thielemans, Gilberto Gil, Sivuca, Jan Garbarek, Richard Bona, Ivan Paduart, Paolo Fresu, Stefano Bollani, Paquito d'Rivera, and many others.

Jim Todd / All Music Guide
“Its transformation in the hands of the Galliano Septet is so profound and personal that it acquires a wholly new character through the multiple layers of polyphonic firepower… This is music that commands the listener to indulge. It is a dense, heavy, and heady spread that will sustain and nourish those who abandon themselves to its riche”
