| Robert Cahen is a seminal figure in the European art realm and is firmly positioned and widely regarded as one of the most important personalities in the field of experimental video.
In Cahen's uniquely nuanced world, fiction and document alike are presented as metaphoric voyages of the imaginary, exquisite reveries that describe passages of time, place, memory and perception.
His research has been haunted by the notion of passing: passing from fixed image to moving image, passing from a place – and a time – to another, transformation of filmed reality and eye, exploration of sound related to the image. His approach is part of an always-renewed dialogue between visible and invisible, narration and poetry, distance and presence, confronting another world, a world made different – beautiful, disturbing – by metamorphoses of time and space.
The Sight of Time* exhibits major works of the artist, integrating these images to an installation device and introducing the visitor in the heart of imaginary landscapes.
Graduating from the Conservatoire National Superieur Musique de Paris, Cahen was a member of the Groupe de Recherche Musicales de l'ORFT (the Office of French Radio and Television) from 1971 to 1974. From 1973 to 1976, he was director of Experimental Video for ORTF/INA. In 1972 he began producing a major body of work (films, videotapes, installations) that combined experimentation in sound with exploration of contemporary visual arts, photography and dance. A true pioneer, Cahen has forged new ways of depicting landscape, city-scape, and theatrical performance, all the while significantly reinvigorating genres like the travel diary and documentary.
Through his playful manipulation of sound and image, space and time, Cahen stresses the fertile encounter between new technology and a creative sensibility, as well as raising theoretical issues related to independent film and video art.
He has exhibited internationally at the Paris Biennale; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; American Film Institute National Video Festival, Los Angeles; World Wide Festival, The Hague; the International Center of Photography, New York; Documenta 8, Kassel; and The Tokyo Festival. Cahen lives and works in Mulhouse, France. |
Robert Cahen
Robert Cahen
