Women's Day
Conference by Mary Stephen

Hong Kong - Montreal – Paris or the exciting itinerary of Chinese film director and editor Mary Stephen; from her schooldays in Hong Kong to her long lasting collaboration with Eric Rohmer in Paris. Invited by the Alliance française de Hong Kong on the occasion of Women ‘s Day, Mary Stephen will share with the audience the amazing chapters of her life, the numerous encounters she made and her career in the cinema industry.

Mary Stephen grew up in Hong Kong in the 60's. It is through attending screenings at the small cine-club of the city hall and reading student magazines that she will discover cinema and the French new Wave. She then goes to Montreal and Canada where her passion for cinema gets so strong that she decides to study it at university. Later on, an exchange program leads her to Paris and a university where she comes across “the tall and thin man with grey hair, who talks about Perceval, studio shooting, middle age music and…budget”. This man is Eric Rohmer.

At that time, Mary actually needs to budget for a project of hers. She then decides to risk one's all by knocking on Eric Rohmer's doors. The director is away but will call her back in the afternoon. A few hours later, Mary Stephen is sitting in front of him, intimidated, drinking tea that he has made for her…the beginning of a long story.

Mary will then direct her second independent film, Justocoeur with Matthieu Carrière before working as assistant editor on Rohmer's The Aviator's Wife. She then leaves Paris and moves to the South of France. When she comes back, 8 years later, she's the mother of three. The Rohmer's family welcomes her with open arms and Mary becomes the editor of Autumn tale and of all the films of Eric Rohmer up to the last one. As a musician and a multi-talented person, she will also compose soundtracks for his films.

Mary Stephen made other encounters, such as the great South African poet Breytenbach on whom she made a documentary, “a portrait from inside” as she says. Mary Stephen is presently working on the editing of a Hong Kong film The Drunkard by Freddie Wong.
